Who Are You

1 John 3:2 (KJV)
"Beloved, now are we the sons of God,
and it doth not yet appear what we shall be:
but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him;
for we shall see him as he is."
Picture
The world will always see us through their lens. We must earnestly while in the world see ourselves through the word of God. We are who we believe about ourself.  Your beliefs are a product of your thoughts.

Your thoughts create your beliefs.
Your beliefs create your convictions.
Your convictions create your attitude.
Your attitude controls your perception.
And your perception dictates your behavior.

The result?  Your life is what you think it should be.

Picture
If everyone in your crowd, your sphere of friends, your family tells you anything other than what God says, reject it. God gives us the correct image of ourselves. God created us. God created us in His image. Do not allow yourself to see yourself as others see you. See yourself as God sees you, regardless of the reflection that others label you with. You may have heard all sorts of things, such as you are weak, not fast enough, not smart enough, not good enough....but you are exactly what God needs.

We become who we associate with! We become of one mind with those we think and converse. We’ve got to talk with Jesus and hang out with Jesus.
My "Raising Kings" was a huge success. Many found their identity. The person they were meant to be found the Spirit of that person. They became who they were always called to be.
There was once a farmer who lived in this village and also was a herder of sheep. One day, he took his sheep out to pasture, and while they were grazing, he suddenly heard a strange noise coming from a patch of grass, which first sounded like a kitten. Led by curiosity, the old shepherd went to see what was the source of this insistent sound, and to his surprise, he found a lone shivering lion cub, obviously separated from his family. His first thought was the danger he would be in if he stayed too close to the cubs and his parents returned. So the old man quickly left the area and watched from a distance to see if the mother lion or pack would return. However, after the sun began to set, there was still no activity to secure the lion cub. The shepherd decided that, in his best judgement, and for the safety and survival of the lion cub, he would take him to his farmhouse and care for him.

“The Lion had become a sheep by association.”

Over the next 8 months (# of new beginnings), the shepherd hand-fed this cub, with fresh milk and kept him warm and safe, secure in the protective confines of the farmhouse. After the cub had grown into a playful, energetic ball of shiny muscle, he would take him out with the sheep to graze. The lion cub grew with the sheep and became part of the herd. They accepted him as one of their own, and he acted like one of them, After 15 months had passed, the little cub became an adolescent lion but he acted, sounded, responded, and behaved just like one of the sheep. In essence, the lion had become a sheep by association. He had lost himself…., he had become one of them.

One hot day, 4 years later, the shepherd sat on a rock, taking refuge in the slight shade of a leafless tree. He watched over his flock as they waded into the quiet, flowing water of the river to drink.

The lion who thought he was a sheep followed them into the water to drink, Suddenly, just across the river there appeared out of the thick jungle bush a large beast that the lion cub had never seen before. The sheep panicked and as if under a spell of some survival instinct, they leaped out of the water and dashed in the direction of the farm. They never stopped until they were all huddled behind the fence in the pen. Strangely the lion cub, who was now a grown lion, was huddled with them, stricken with fear.

While the flock scrambled for the safety of the farm, the beast made a sound that seemed to shake the forest. When he lifted his head above the tall grass, the shepherd could see that he held in his blood-drenched mouth the lifeless body of a lamb from the flock. The man knew that danger had returned to his part of the forest.

Seven days passed without further incident, and then, while the flock grazed, the lion cub now grown went down to the river to drink again. As he bent over the water, he suddenly panicked and ran wildly toward the farmhouse for safety. The sheep did not run and wondered why he had, while the lion wondered why the sheep had not run, since he had seen the beast again. After a while, the young lion went slowly back to the flock and then to the water to drink again. Once more, he saw the beast and froze in panic.

It was his own reflection in the water.

While he tried to understand what he was seeing, suddenly the beast appeared out of the jungle again. The flock dashed with breakneck speed toward the farmhouse, but before the young lion could move, the beast stepped in to the water toward him and made that deafening sound that filled the forest. For a moment the young lion felt that his life was about to end. He realized that he saw not just one beast, but two. One in the water and one before him.

His head was spinning with confusion as the beast came with 10 feet of him and growled at him face-to-face with frightening power in a way that seemed to say to him, “Try it, and come and follow me.”

He felt stirrings that he had never known before.

As fear gripped the young lion, he decided to try to appease the beast and make the same sound. However, the noise that came from his gaping jaws was the sound of a sheep. The beast responded with an even louder burst that seemed to say, “Try it again.” After seven or eight attempts, the young lion heard himself make the same sound as the beast. He also felt the stirrings in his body and feelings he had never known before. It was as if he was experiencing a total transformation in mind, body and spirit.

Suddenly, there stood in the river of life two beast growling at and to each other. Then the shepherd saw something he would never forget. As the beastly sounds filled the forest for miles around the big beast stopped, turned his back on the young lion, and started toward the forest. Then, he paused and looked at the young lion, and started towards the forest. Then, he paused and looked at the young lion one more time and growled, as if to say, “Are you coming?” The young lion knew what the gesture meant and suddenly realized that his day of decision had arrived. The day he would have to choose whether to continue to live life a a sheep or to be the self he had just discovered.

He knew that, to become his true self, he would have to give up the safe, secure, predictable, and simple life of the farm and enter the frightening, wild, untamed, unpredictable, dangerous life of the jungle. It was a day to become true to himself and the false image if another life behind, It was an invitation to a sheep to become a king. Most importantly an invitation for the body of a lion to possess the Spirit of a Lion.

After looking back and forth at the farm and the jungle a few times, the young lion turned his back on the farm and the sheep with whom he lived for years, and he followed the beast into the forest to become who he always had been…a lion king!

It is a difficult transition across the river to our true identity.

You will have to leave the safe confines of being a follower, if you are going to become who God created you to be. Get your roar back!

Picture
ACTION STEPS: God is waiting on you to reach out and touch Him. Call upon Him. Ask Him to make you more than you believe yourself to be. Ask God to help you develop into who HE created you to be. Go ahead and try to roar....it may take a few attempts but you will never know if you don't try.
This years Intensive is over. Make plans to attend next year September 10-12, 2019 at the same place. Payment plans start tomorrow.
Let's Raise kings for the King of kings is returning.

Plan~Prepare~Produce

Proverbs 24:27 "Prepare thy work without, and make it fit for thyself in the field; and afterwards build thine house."
Picture
The scripture above tells us get a job before we want to go sit on the couch and be comfortable. If we don't plan for work (to have a job) to provide for what we are preparing for, we won't be able to produce. We must make a plan, work the plan and believe God to produce. Our times are in His hands, but the seed is in ours. We are to go fish for men. When Jesus told the disciple to go fish, He said, "... and a coin would be in the fishes mouth." Then He told him go pay both their taxes. There is a principle here. We must work the bible says, or we are not to eat. When we go into the field (the world)  and sow seed (God's word), God will provide for us.
Picture
Seed is always sown with an open hand, never a clinched fist. The tighter we hold onto something the less we can hold. We are to be open handed with the Word of God, sowing the Word every opportunity we get. As we are faithful in God's field and God's House, then He gives us our own.

For over a year I have planned, prepared, promoted for the "Raising Kings Intensive 2019" now it is time to produce. I believe God will bring the increase. If we are faithful in what He has given us, He will give us more. I am believing this to be the best Intensive I have ever hosted. I have been faithful for over 20 years doing these women's conferences and I know God is faithful.

Picture
ACTION STEP: Make plans. Work while you are making plans. Prepare for the blessings to come, because they will. When you begin to produce success, money, changed lives, whatever the increase--remember God. Give God the glory. Give God the First Fruits. Remember the Sabbath. Remember those who taught you and continue to honor them. Thank those who helped you get where you are today. Gratitude is never out of style and it keeps us humble.

The four killer "bees": beauty, brains, bucks and brawn

9/10/2019

The world will tell you if you don't have beauty, brains, bucks or brawn, forget it. The emphasis is always on externals-what you have and do-rather than on who you are.

Who do you consider to be successful? Who do you look up to? I suspect it is those people who manifest one of those "killer bees". They are people who have amassed a fortune and made an impact (like Bill Gates). They may be people who are famous (Michael Jordan, a movie star). It may be someone (for Christians) who has a big church, is seen on television, writes a lot of books.

Do you see that all these things are surface issues? Jesus calls us to something deeper. He calls us to hunger for a godly character. Jesus says God is not looking for press clippings, attendance figures, bank accounts . . . . He is looking for "fruit".

Picture
Trees don't try to produce fruit they just be.
They just be what they were created to be.
And out of what they were created to be comes the fruit that was inside the seed.

ACTION STEP: Just pray this prayer with me today as this song plays in the background.
Lord, help me to just be content at being your child.
Help me to be who you created me to be, fulfilling daily what you have called me to do.
Jesus, I give my life to you. Do with me Lord what You see fit.
And, help Lord to not give in, give up, or quit...
but just be.
Amen

Doing Your Best Is More Important Than Being the Best

9/9/2019

Galatians 6:9 "And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up."
The number nine is the number of Harvest. Today is the day to begin. 9/9/19 has three number 9's in it. Which got me thinking about the number nine.  I want a harvest. I want to have a life that is a rich harvest for God, and for the days I have on earth. I desire to live a life that inspires others to be the best version of themselves. Sometimes we will be the one trying to be our best, and at other times we will be the one encouraging others.

Cathy Rigby was a member of the U.S. Women's Gymnastics Team in the 1972 Olympics at Munich, and she had only one goal in mind, to win a gold medal. She had trained hard over a long period.

On the day she was scheduled to perform, she prayed for the strength and the control to get through her routine without making mistakes. She was tense with determination, not to let herself or her country down. She performed well, but when it was all over and the winners were announced, her name was not among them.

Cathy was crushed.

Afterward, she joined her parents in the stands, all set for a good cry. As she sat down, she could barely manage to say, "I'm sorry. I did my best."

"You know that, and I know that," her mother said, "and I'm sure God knows that too."

Then, Cathy recalls, her mother said 10 words that she has never forgotten: "Doing your best is more important than being the best."

The Meaning of Numbers: The Number 9 is used 49 times in Scripture, the number 9 symbolizes divine completeness or conveys the meaning of finality. Christ died at the 9th hour of the day, or 3 p.m., to make the way of salvation open to everyone. The Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur) is the only one of God's annual Feast days of worship that requires believers to fast for one day. This special day, considered by many Jews to be the holiest of the year, begins at sunset on day 9 of the seventh Hebrew month (Leviticus 23:32).

The number 9 also represents the fruits of God's Holy Spirit, which are Faithfulness, Gentleness, Goodness, Joy, Kindness, Long suffering, Love, Peace and Self-control (Galatians 5:22 - 23).

Appearances of the number nine: In
Hosea, who was Israel's last king before the kingdom fell to the Assyrians in 723 B.C., reigned for just 9 years (732 to 723 B.C.).

The total destruction of Jerusalem's temple began, on the Hebrew Calendar, on Ab 9. It was also on this day that the second (also known as Herod's) temple was burned to the ground by the Romans in 70 A.D.

Today, we have an opportunity to start all over. Everyday we wake up it is a new start. Everyday we wake up we have the opportunity to become the best version of ourself--and when we change ourself, everything around us changes. If we change what we put in, then what comes out will change.
Picture
What spiritual activities and disciplines are helping you love God more and love others more? This is a challenge we face, particularly in America. We are living in a culture where the trend is one of greater and greater isolation. Our dependency on technologies like our cellphones and computers wrap us in a virtual cocoon, making our hyper connected nation the loneliest nation on earth. We re social beings and we need to have interactions with people. Our christianity needs tried and tested to become strong. What we believe about ourselves comes out in the presence of others.

In the beginning when God created Adam He said, “It is not good for the man to be alone”. He then created Eve to be his partner and companion. (Genesis 2:18 NIV) God created each one of us for community, yet a quarter of Americans say they’ve felt lonely in the last month. Does that describe your life today? We yearn to experience life in all its fullness and become the best version of ourselves but many of us don’t know where to begin or we get lost and distracted along the way.

God wants you to become the best version of yourself. If you dream of success, of love, and friendships you can trust and lean on, begin by investing in your relationship with God and let His will and wisdom carry you through to your greatest potential.
Picture
ACTION STEP: Go ahead and do something you have never done before. Go ahead and try something for the benefit of others. Give until you change. The best version of you will always inspire others to be the best version of themselves.
I want to spend one on one time with you, sharing my life and teachable moments with you so you can do all God has called you to do. Go to: http://restorationchurchintl.org/women-of-witness . Attitude is not half the battle it is the battle.

"Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference."
Winston Churchill
Picture
Your attitude—for better or worse—is affecting your relationships. Why not take a moment each day (more often, if necessary) and check your attitude? Make positive adjustments when you find negativity settling in. If you do, you may just find that others have a better attitude toward you as well. One way to do this is when others start raising their voice, start lowering yours. Treat others with gentleness and you will gain their respect.
Picture
When we allow others to control our attitude, we turn over the power of Lordship to people, rather than the Holy Spirit. In our actions we are saying we care more what people think, than we do what God thinks. Our actions show our attitude. All our decisions, and choices, are based on our attitudes toward God, or toward others, or towards ourself. Who are we truly trying to please? Many times we are choosing to please ourself. We need to cultivate an attitude of fear of the Lord. A healthy genuine fear that says, if God says it--that settles it. He is God and I am not.

ACTION STEP: When someone comes to you broken do they have the strength, and knowledge to move on healed, or do they just feel pitied and petted? Gentleness confronts with the goal to heal, bind up the broken. Be gentle with yourself and others.
If you feel like a bruised reed – come to him and find healing.
If you feel like a smoldering wick, come to him to find restoration.
If you feel like a lost sheep, come to him to be found.
If you feel like a weary worn out traveler, come to him for rest.
If you feel like a sheep without a shepherd, harassed and helpless, come to the Good shepherd and find compassion.
If you have seen your sin, come to the tender-hearted savior and find gracious forgiveness.

Meekness isn't weakness, it is strength under control.

“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.”
Picture
Meekness and gentleness are words that are interchangeable in the Bible. Depending on the translation one uses, the scriptures will read differently. But, for my Blog today, we will use the word gentleness. Probably the best teaching on this subject that I have heard, has been by Rick Warren, and can be found on You Tube. He list eight things, that Gentleness can do, and really expounds on each one with scripture to back it up. I posted it below.
Picture
Dictionary Definition: the greek word used here in Galatians 5:22: Gentleness means: “the quality of not being overly impressed by a sense of one’s own self-importance; gentleness, humility, courtesy, considerateness, meekness.”

My definition: An internal, self-assessment of humility, leading to an outward attitude of gentleness towards others, and that attitude towards others includes being: courteous, cooperative, considerate, submissive; being sensitive to how your words and actions affect others; being willing to defer to the opinions and preferences of others instead of insisting upon your own way; being tender towards the weaknesses, temptations, limitations of others rather than despising and looking down upon them; resolving problems with the least amount of force or authority or control, and with the most patience and carefulness.

Picture
We all want an inheritance. Look at what Matthew 5:5 tells us. The meek inherit the earth! That is a huge promise right there. Being gentle with ourselves, with one another and even with animals, birds, etc. can bring an inheritance.

I learned so much in this study. You can also check out my teaching at
https://www.facebook.com/RestorationChurchInternational/videos/963552503990947/

I think Rick Warren does such a good job I am attaching it here. I pray it blesses you.
ACTION STEP: Allow God to get down on the inside of you and live big through you. In and of ourself we can't be gentle at all times, with all people. However, the fruit of the Spirit is gentleness so it can grow out of our relationship with Jesus Christ. Moses had an anger problem, but the Bible tells us he was the meekest man on earth. We may not have a problem free life, but we can be free.

Let's try to be a little more gentle.

9/4/2019

"Gentleness" is an important Christian virtue – yet I wonder if it’s one we overlook? Perhaps, it's just me but I don't see or experience much gentleness in the world. When I do see it, it somewhat stops me in my tracks for a moment and I think to myself, "Wow, that/they were so gentle." I believe it gets the attention of God too.
Picture
Take a look at all these scriptures:

Ephesians 4:1-3 I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

Colossians 3:12-13 Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another …

Galatians 6:1 Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted.

2 Corinthians 10:1 – Paul says that he appeals to them with the meekness and gentleness of Christ

1 Timothy 3:3 – requires that elders in the church be “Not violent but gentle”

1 Timothy 6:11 – But as for you, O man of God…Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness.

1 Thessalonians 2:7 – Paul gives an image of how gentleness characterized his ministry when he says that among them they were “like a nursing mother taking care of her own children.” I doubt that there exists a more suitable image of “gentleness” than that.

2 Timothy 2:25 – instructs us to correct even our opponents with gentleness.
Titus 3:2 – tells us “to speak evil of no one, to avoid quarreling, to be gentle, and to show perfect courtesy toward all people.”

James 1:21 Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.

James 3:13 – Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom.

Philippians 4:5 – “let your gentleness be evident to all” – why gentleness of all things?

Matthew 5:5 – In Jesus’ list of beatitudes – “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.”

Picture
I shared a lot of scripture with you today, because I feel like scripture tells things with life infused words. As children of God, we need to display this virtue to the elderly, who are tired of the roughness of life, the weariness, of the curse. To the teenagers, that are trying to adult in a mind and body, that hasn't been here long enough, to truly know how things work. Remember, it wasn't so long ago we held them in our arms, and rocked them to sleep. Gentleness, to those caught up in the whirlwind of life. They are trying to make a living, keep their marriages working, raise a family, buy a home, and all the things we as humans try to do, that steals our gentleness.

Satan came to steal, kill and destroy but he does it, oh so sly, in the way in which he does it. An angry moment. A tired body. An unmet need. A hungry tummy. All these singled out, standing alone, we can handle them. But, put them all together and we loose many of the manifestations, or facets, of the Fruit of the Spirit.
Picture
I read  book called, "The Calvary Road", by Roy Hession. He penned a word picture that is forever etched in my mind. He said, Jesus walked in such a way that a Dove felt safe to land on His shoulder." Then Roy asked, "Are we so gentle that a Dove could land on our shoulder and our daily life and mannerisms not frighten it away?
Picture
ACTION STEP: Today, breathe. Just breathe. Take a moment, to just take in the beauty around you. Stop and watch, the small child at play. Stop and watch, the flock of birds guide through the sky. Stop and remember, why you married that spouse. Stop, and let the hardness of life go, and take in the gentleness that Jesus died for, that we might possess. Let gentleness be your word for the day. Ask God to help you be gentle, and He will.

If you do not have a local church you attend I invite you to http://restorationchurchintl.org/

Jonah 3:10 -4:11 NIV
"When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he relented and did not bring on them the destruction he had threatened.
But to Jonah this seemed very wrong, and he became angry. He prayed to the Lord, “Isn’t this what I said, Lord, when I was still at home? That is what I tried to forestall by fleeing to Tarshish. I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity. Now, Lord, take away my life, for it is better for me to die than to live.”
But the Lord replied, “Is it right for you to be angry?”
Jonah had gone out and sat down at a place east of the city. There he made himself a shelter, sat in its shade and waited to see what would happen to the city. Then the Lord God provided a leafy plant[c] and made it grow up over Jonah to give shade for his head to ease his discomfort, and Jonah was very happy about the plant. But at dawn the next day God provided a worm, which chewed the plant so that it withered. When the sun rose, God provided a scorching east wind, and the sun blazed on Jonah’s head so that he grew faint. He wanted to die, and said, “It would be better for me to die than to live.”
But God said to Jonah, “Is it right for you to be angry about the plant?”
“It is,” he said. “And I’m so angry I wish I were dead.”
But the Lord said, “You have been concerned about this plant, though you did not tend it or make it grow. It sprang up overnight and died overnight.  And should I not have concern for the great city of Nineveh, in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell their right hand from their left—and also many animals?”

So many of us get mad at God when the wicked are not punished. When we don't get punished we think we deserved mercy and God was faithful. God's mercy is for everyone. God is no respecter of persons. What God will do for one He will do for everyone....that is everyone who calls upon His name and obeys His commands.
Picture
Think about this for a moment. Jonah was angry because the people took action on the message he preached! Really Jonah? Do you know how many of us preachers, share a message and no one listens and obeys, no one takes action? The people you gave the message to that was from God changed hearts and you go pout like a spoiled child? God still blessed him with a shade plant for his head and spoke to him. How many of us would have been so merciful? No me! Sorry to say God is till working on me. I am a work in progress. But, in the process He gives us what we need....not necessarily what we want.
Picture
ACTION STEP: Read the entire book of Jonah. Put yourself in his place. See God working for Jonah's good and the good of the lost people of Nineveh. God loves people and He wants to use us to love them, save them and forgive them of their sins just like he does. The choice however is ours to make. What we do with what God tells us is up to us. However, when we choose to disobey the people we hang out with start loosing stuff. The people on the ship had to start throwing things overboard. What loses is your disobedience causing others. Do you need to disconnect? Do you need thrown overboard? Has it come to that? Repent and get right with God and others. Do you care abut the lost? Then show it!

Jonah  Chapter 1 (NIV)
The word of the Lord came to Jonah son of Amittai:
“Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me.”
But Jonah ran away from the Lord and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and
sailed for Tarshish to flee from the Lord.
Picture
Okay Jonah, God said go one way and you went a different direction. Do you even have your spiritual GPS on? Do you know who you are running from? God is a perfect GPS before we knew there was one. God's Plan of Salvation is always going to include people--people like you and me. Where can we make our bed that He can't find us? I mean really? It's storming (Read the Book of Jonah) and the men toss Jonah over board, and at that exact moment God has a whale, (better than an Uber) right there waiting to pick him up, and take him to the shore, to spit him out. Now, really? Yes, read it....it took the whale three days to get him back to shore and vomit him up. Do you realize how hard it would be to find one man today, let alone back in the day Jonah lived to find one man a 3 days journey, by whale, to the shore? Do we really think God doesn't know exactly where we are? Do we really think we can hide anything from God?
Picture
I know, I have a hard time believing this could happen too, but the bible doesn't lie. God will have His way with those that love Him and are called according to His purposes. God is a God of second chances.
Jonah Chapter 3 NIV
"Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time: “Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim to it the message I give you.”
Jonah obeyed the word of the Lord and went to Nineveh. Now Nineveh was a very large city; it took three days to go through it. Jonah began by going a day’s journey into the city, proclaiming, “Forty more days and Nineveh will be overthrown.”  The Ninevites believed God. "

ACTION STEP: Today, September 1, 2019 make a decision to locate yourself. Jonah realized where he was and when he did he realized where God was. God never forgot about Jonah. Jonah never denied God was his Lord. Turn your GPS on. God has a plan for your life.

Worth your salt?

Matt. 5:13,14 Message
“Let me tell you why you are here.
You’re here to be salt-seasoning that brings out the God-flavors of this earth.
If you lose your saltiness, how will people taste godliness?
You’ve lost your usefulness and will end up in the garbage.
“Here’s another way to put it:
You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world.
God is not a secret to be kept.
We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you?
I’m putting you on a light stand.
Now that I’ve put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand—shine!
Keep open house; be generous with your lives.
By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven.
Picture
The only thing that can make salt loose it's saltiness is to dilute it with something else. We have been diluted with the things of this world. We aren't making people thirsty for the things of God. Salt is to be many things.

To the physicist, light is electromagnetic radiation. To the miner, light is the needed energy to pierce the inky darkness of an underground cavern. To the cataract patient, light is intensely focused amplified radiation needed for laser surgery which reduces the trauma and recovery time of surgical removal.

What is the main value of light? Negatively, it helps you avoid danger. Positively, it helps you reach what you are after. When you walk in the darkness, you may stumble over a log, or step on a rattlesnake, or fall off a cliff, or hit your head on a low-hanging branch. Darkness is full of threat. It frustrates your ability to attain your goal. But light changes all that. It exposes dangers and frees you from their lurking power. It opens the way to your goal. It is full of hope and promises the glad attainment of your goal.

When we serve as Jesus commanded, using our gifts and talents to meet the needs of people around us, we become as salt and light to people, pointing them to God. In essence we matter! We make a difference.

Picture
I think the reason Jesus chose these two metaphors - salt and light - is because of their unique qualities. Both carry enormous influence. Both have immediate impact. Both are noticed instantly. Both are difficult to veil. Both are ubiquitous, everywhere, pervasive, universal.

"You are the salt of the earth" is so famous that it has become a proverb in the English language. If someone is genuine, useful, honest, straightforward, and without hypocrisy, we say he is a "salt of the earth" type of person.

What did Jesus mean?

Salt was one of the most common substances in the ancient world. Roman soldiers were paid in salt and would revolt if they didn't get their ration. Indeed, our English word "salary" comes from the Latin salarium, which literally means "salt-money." And our expression, "That man is not worth his salt," is a reminder of the high value that salt had in biblical times.

What are its uses?

1. It is a preservative.
In the ancient world the primary function of salt was a preservative. It retards spoilage. Likewise, believers act like a preservative in the world. As we bring Christ's word and the Kingdom's influence into our society, we help protect society from the full sway of evil that would otherwise be present. Imagine our land with no churches . . . no Christian colleges . . . no church-supported hospitals . . . no Christian social action groups  . . . no Christian organizations ministering to those in need.

2. Is a flavoring.
Or seasoning. In a similar fashion, Christianity brings spice and zest to life. The Christian is the personification of how life is to be lived.

3. Is an antiseptic.
In ancient times newborn babies were rubbed in salt so that the cuts and infections of medically primitive birth methods could be healed. While this sounds painful, the cleaning out of a wound with salt was very effective in fighting infection.
Christians have a responsibility of not only pointing out sin, but practically offering healing and help. By exerting our influence, we can prevent the ravages of disease and death caused by sin.

4. Creates thirst.
It has been said that you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink. But, the rest of the saying goes, you can give him a salt tablet and making him thirsty. As Jesus made people thirsty for God the Father, so do Christians make people thirsty for the real life found only in Christianity.
Picture
We have a great opportunity each and everyday to be salt and light to the world. Without us there is no persevering agent. Without you and I doing our part life has ceased to be flavorful, full of zest and desired. Without you and I living like the salt and light we are called to be the world is not thirsty for the word of God nor the things of God.
Picture
Jesus not only says that we are the salt of the earth, he also says we are the light of the world. The dictionary defines light as a "source of illumination."

1. Dispels darkness.
Christians, reflecting the light of Christ, bearing his light dispel spiritual darkness. The progress may seem slow, but the results are apparent.

2.  Reveals.
Have you ever walked into a darkened room and not known what was there? Then, suddenly, the light is switched on and the contents of the room are revealed.
As Christ's presence in our world, we become his instruments to reveal his truth to a world in darkness.

3. Awakens.
We are to be the light of the world, awakening men and women to the truth of the Kingdom's arrival, awakening society to the presence of God.

4. Warns.
In the same sense that a lighthouse warns of dangerous waters or a police car flashing light warns of the policeman darting through traffic, Christians warn of impending danger to a careless world.
