Perilous Times

Seems every day now we turn on the TV or hear on the radio that someone has shot someone, robbed someone, or in some way hurt or violated another human being. We all lock our cars, lock our homes, and are still victims of identity theft or credit card theft. We need to be knowledgeable about what lies ahead and what we are to do in the midst of it all.

2 Timothy 3:1-5 (NKJV) “But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: 2 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3 unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, 4 traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!”

The first five verses of 2 Timothy 3 offer a sobering catalogue of corruption. In a sense, this is a shorter version of Romans 1:18-32. This is what happens when a nation turns its back on God. First, there is a total rejection of God. People are unholy, ungrateful, lovers of themselves, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God. This leads to a total moral collapse. People become lovers of money, conceited, without love toward others, boastful, proud, unforgiving, conceited, “not lovers of what is good.” Finally, there is the total breakdown of society. People will be treacherous, rash, slanderous, brutal, and disobedient to parents, abusive and without self-control. That last phrase means that in the end, anything goes. No rules, no moral absolutes, no restraints of any kind. Every man does that which is right in his own eyes, and woe to the person who dares to question his “lifestyle choices.”

But we haven’t gotten to the bad news yet. That comes in verse 5 “Having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them.” The word “form” means something like, “having the outward appearance” of godliness. That is, in the last days, as men turn away from God, paradoxically, they will become more religious, not less. Religion will become more popular as we approach the end times because people will seek some refuge in a world that increasingly has religion for religion’s sake, not religion for the sake of knowing Christ. They will join the church (or some other religious organization), they will be baptized, attend the services, sing and pray and give and go through the motions, but their hearts will not be in it. They will deny the very power they profess to believe. In particular, they will embrace a kind of postmodern religion that allows them to do anything, believe anything, and endorse anything, live any way they choose as long as it makes them happy. They will say things like, “We don’t need to be bound by the outdated rules of the Bible. Those were written 2,000 years ago and don’t apply to us today.”

As the world gets darker those that are of the light will be brighter. Bright lights attract bugs. We as Christians may be targets of the darkness.  Nevertheless we must continue to shine and expel the darkness. Yes, perilous times are upon us but we are powerful people called of God with a purpose to be the light of the world and we are not moved. We will have great peace as long as our minds are set on Christ.

Colossians 3:1-11 (NKJV) “If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. 2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. 3 For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.5 Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.6 Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience, 7 in which you yourselves once walked when you lived in them.8 But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth. 9 Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds, 10 and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him,11 where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcised nor uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave nor free, but Christ is all and in all.”

The Last Month Of The Year

We are quickly approaching the last of this year. Soon 2015 will be over. We anticipate the beginning of a new year. In order for one thing to begin it means there is an end of something else. We get married and start a new life but we end our single life.  When we have children and they grow up and leave home we transition from being a full house to an empty house. New beginnings bring endings.

“Life is an endless cycle of beginnings and endings; of comings and goings, of saying hello and saying goodbye. Either one without the other can leave life incomplete and unfinished with ragged edges and painful reminders.”  Reverend Don Gall

Ecclesiastes 7: 1-14 (NLT) “The day one dies is better than the day he is born! 2 It is better to spend your time at funerals than at festivals. For you are going to die, and it is a good thing to think about it while there is still time. 3 Sorrow is better than laughter, for sadness has a refining influence on us. 4 Yes, a wise man thinks much of death, while the fool thinks only of having a good time now. 10 Don’t long for “the good old days,” for you don’t know whether they were any better than these!... 14 Enjoy prosperity whenever you can, and when hard times strike, realize that God gives one as well as the other—so that everyone will realize that nothing is certain in this life.”

Don’t allow us to leave a season without getting all we can get out of each day. Prepare us for our tomorrow. Help us to release anything that would keep us tethered to our past that would keep us from our future. Amen.

Today Is The Day

Did you ever notice that when there is only one day to do something it usually gets done?  There is only one Black Friday. There is only one Cyber Monday. Are you catching my point? When you narrow your options it’s amazing how clear things can become.

2 Corinthians 6:2 (NIV) “For God says, "At just the right time, I heard you. On the day of salvation, I helped you." Indeed, the "right time" is now. Today is the day of salvation.”

Today not any other day is the day of salvation. Many think that they can be saved tomorrow, when they are older, when they quit sinning but the Bible tells us today is the day.  Thanksgiving is one day. Christmas is one day. Your birthday is only one day.  We understand that these are finite, yet when it comes to salvation we seem to think we have options.

Today is the day.  If you have not made today the day of salvation for you what are you waiting for? Today is the day.
